BEACH BUMS END SEASON WITH LOSS TO KALAMAZOO

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums concluded the 2008 season with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Kalamazoo Kings on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park.

Zack Kalter and Brad Miller finished with a pair of hits as the Beach Bums outhit Kalamazoo 8-6. Steve Roberts threw 4.1 innings in his final start and did not factor in the decision after allowing one run while walking five and striking out six. Matt Trausch took the loss in relief.

The Beach Bums concluded their second season under Manager Jon Cahill with a 50-46 record, just outside of the Frontier League playoff race.

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Frontier League announced its post-season award winners today and the Beach Bums were honored with selections in two different categories.

For the second time in the team’s three year history the Traverse City Beach Bums were chosen as the Frontier League’s Organization of the Year.

Steve Young was also selected individually as the recipient of the Fran Riordan Citizenship Award. Young is in his third season with the Beach Bums and is a tireless worker in the community, spending a great deal of time as a youth leader and counselor.

BEACH BUMS FALL TO PAINTS IN FINAL ROAD GAME

CHILLICOTHE, OH – The Traverse City Beach Bums were defeated by the Chillicothe Paints 4-1 in the final road contest of 2008.

Chillicothe rode the early momentum of having Travis Garcia’s number retired in a pregame ceremony. The Paints struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning off of Ryan Gehring. Joe Spiers and Travis Garcia each singled with one away. Drew Saylor plated the run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Ryan Gehring took the hard luck loss. Gehring tossed 6.2 innings and allowed just one earned run in his final start of the season. He scattered 10 hits. Andy Polk threw a complete game for the Paints, allowing just one run on four hits to record his eighth win of the season. It was his third complete game. Kyle Maunus had two of the four hits for the Beach Bums, who also drew four walks in the contest.

The Beach Bums (48-45) return home a game out of the final playoff spot with three games to play. LHP Drew Taylor (2-1, 2.73) will make his final start of the season for the Beach Bums while Kalamazoo will send RHP Joe DiPietro (7-5, 3.02) to the hill. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6:05 pm on a TBA Credit Union Sponsorship Night. The first 500 fans will receive a TBA hat.
