BEACH BUMS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
AVON, OH – the Traverse City Beach Bums(33-51) and Lake Erie Crushers(41-45) each picked up a win in Wednesday’s doubleheader with Lake Erie winning game 1, 6-1, and the Beach Bums taking game two, 3-0.
Back on August 10th, at Wuerfel Park, the Lake Erie Crushers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Conner Simonetti. After the fourth inning was completed, the rains came down and didn’t stop, forcing the suspension of the game, which was resumed tonight. After a scoreless fifth inning, and a 12 day delay, Brandon Murray hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, to give Lake Erie a 3-0 lead.
Orlando Rivera led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single. He then stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. After Arby Fields walked, Steven Patterson drove in the Bums’ first run on an RBI single to pull Traverse City within two. In the ninth, Lake Erie pulled away thanks to a solo homer by Brandon Murray and a two-run single by Jordan Dean.
Jordan Kurokawa pitched all five innings today to pick up the win and improve to 6-4. He gave up just one unearned run on five hits and a walk, while striking out five. John Havird suffered the loss, going the original four innings on August 10th. He gave up one run on four hits and three walks to fall to 4-6.
In game 2, it took until the sixth inning but the Beach Bums got on the board. Luke Lowery led off the inning with a double down the left field line. With Nick Murphy at the plate, he stole third, forcing the Crushers to draw in the infield. Murphy then slapped a grounder off the shortstop, into centerfield scoring Lowery for the game’s first run. In the seventh, Arby Fields took a first pitch fast ball over the right field wall for his third homer of the season. Steven Patterson immediately followed with a solo shot of his own, his 14th of the season, making it a 3-0 game.
John Havird seemed to get stronger as the game went along as he earned the complete game shutout win, improving to 5-6. He gave up five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Juan Caballero drew the loss after going five and a third innings, allowing just one run on five hits and five walks. He falls to 5-4.
Thursday night, the Beach Bums and Crushers finish up this week’s four game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm and the voice of the Beach Bums, Tom Willms, will go on the air with the Budweiser pre-game show at 6:15 on 101.9FM- The Bay.
