T’bolts Strike Late In 2-1 Win
CRESTWOOD, IL— An eighth inning RBI-single by second baseman Michael Torres gave the Windy City Thunderbolts the go-ahead run as they took game two of a three-game series at Standard Bank Stadium by a score of 2-1.
Traverse City starting pitcher David Nathanson (0-1), who was signed earlier in the day, pitched a complete game but ended up as the tough-luck loser for giving up two runs in suffering his first loss of the season. Windy City starting pitcher Matt Jernstad (5-6) pitched a complete game four-hitter to earn his fifth win of the season.
Windy City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Torres delivered his first of his three hits in the contest, an RBI-single to give the Thunderbolts the earlier edge. The Beach Bums tied the game at one when third baseman Jose Vargas launched a sacrifice fly to left-center field, scoring centerfielder Zack Pace to give Traverse City their only run, tying the game at one.
In the eighth, Windy City left fielder Quentin Luquette bunted the first pitch he saw down the third base line, reaching on a bunt single to begin the inning. After being sacrificed to second base by center fielder Brandon Anderson, Torres lined a two-out single to score Luquette and give the Thunderbolts the lead, ending the scoring in the ballgame.
With the loss, the Beach Bums fall to 31-31, while Windy City improves to 35-27 on the season. The loss drops the Beach Bums to four and a half games back of the first-place Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League East Division. The Beach Bums are now 0-5 in games played at Windy City.
The Beach Bums three-game series with the Windy City Thunderbolts concludes Friday night at 8:05 p.m. The Budweiser Pregame Show starts at 7:45 p.m. on Sunny Country 101.9 FM and streaming online through tcbeachbums.com.
