Slammers Take Series Finale'
JOLIET, IL— The Traverse City Beach Bums gave up four runs in the seventh inning as they allowed the Joliet Slammers to take the final game of their three-game series in front of 1,506 fans at Silver Cross Field Monday afternoon by a score of 6-4.
The Beach Bums jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by left fielder J.T Hall. The run batted in made Hall the first Beach Bum with 50 RBI’s this season. The Beach Bums would add another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Greg Burns to give Traverse City a 3-0 edge. In the fifth, Joliet would strike for two runs in an inning highlighted by a double steal of second base by shortstop Brad Netzel and of home by right fielder Josh Flores to make the score 3-2 in favor of Traverse City.
Traverse City added a run in the seventh thanks to a solo home run from Jeff Flagg, his seventh of the season to give the Beach Bums a 4-2 lead. The lead looked safe, as the usually dominant Beach Bums bullpen was left to protect the lead. Surprisingly, the Slammers were able to strike for four runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a pair of two-run singles by Netzel and left fielder David Fox to give Joliet their first lead of the ballgame at 6-4, ending the scoring in the contest.
Traverse City reliever Scott Reid (0-2) pitched a third of an inning allowing four runs in suffering his second loss of the season. Joliet starting pitcher Kevin Crimmel (4-3) pitched just seven innings allowing four runs in recording his fourth win in 2011. Slammers reliever Ryan Quigley pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his twentieth save of the season.
With the loss, the Beach Bums fall to 34-32, but remain one game back of the second-place Windy City Thunderbolts in the Frontier League East Division after the Thunderbolts lost earlier in the day. Joliet improves to 37-28 on the season. Flagg had two hits at the plate to lead the Traverse City offense.
