Shelton And Pearl Head To Traverse City
TRAVERSE CITY, MI— The Traverse City Beach Bums added to their pitching depth when the team announced the signing of right-hander Spencer Shelton on Monday. The team also filled a need at the catching position with catcher/outfielder Brandon Pearl. Photo of Spencer Shelton provided by and used with the permission of Piedmont College.
Shelton was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox after finishing his collegiate career at Piedmont College. He was assigned to the White Sox rookie affiliate, the Bristol White Sox and appeared in 10 games for the club. Shelton went 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA in over 22 innings on the hill while striking out 22 batters. On the season, Shelton held opponents to a .233 batting average.
"Spencer could fill a number of different roles for us from starter, to long or middle relief,” said Jason Wuerfel, Director of Baseball Operations. “You can never have enough good pitching and signing Shelton this close to the season is very encouraging about the potential depth of our staff."
Brandon Pearl split his college time between Truman State and Avila University, where his performance earned him a 2010 First Team All-Conference selection. He also received a gold glove award for his defensive performance. Pearl, a .329 career hitter for Avila, will battle for a job as a backup catcher for the Beach Bums.
"Brandon attended both of our open tryout camps this off-season and I was very impressed by his skill set,” said Wuerfel. “Between our November and March tryouts, I could tell he really took to heart what I told him he needed to do in order to play professional baseball, and a player that is willing to work that hard deserves a shot.”
