Grizzlies Use The Longball In 7-2 Win
SAUGET, IL— The Gateway Grizzlies hit back-to-back-to-back home runs as they took the first game of a three-game series with a 7-2 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums in front of 3,125 fans at GCS Ballpark.
Traverse City opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run from right fielder Jason Codiroli to make it 1-0. In the fourth, Gateway got three straight home runs to give the Grizzlies all the offense they needed. A two-run home run from designated hitter Charlie Lisk, and solo shots from center fielder Joe Agreste and catcher Landon Hernandez off Beach Bums starter Justin Mazur gave Gateway a 4-1 lead.
In the eighth, Hernandez struck again by launching a two-run homer, ending the scoring in the ballgame and giving the Grizzlies a 7-2 lead. Hernandez had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Gateway in the contest.
Codiroli had a perfect night at the plate for the Beach Bums, getting hits in all three of his at-bats to lead Traverse City. Designated hitter Hector Bernal made his Beach Bums debut, recording a single in his first at-bat of the contest after being signed earlier Tuesday afternoon.
Mark Brackman (2-0) pitched seven solid innings, allowing only two Beach Bums runs while striking out eight to record his second win of the season. Mazur (1-2) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs in suffering the loss for Traverse City, his second of 2011.
The Grizzlies improve to 6-4 with the win, while the Beach Bums fall to 4-6 on the season.
