FOUR BEACH BUMS SELECTED FOR ALL-STAR GAME
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums are
proud to announce that Kramer Champlin, Steven Patterson, Will Kengor, and Jose
Vargas, have been selected to play in the 2016 Frontier League All-Star Game, on
July 13th in Florence, KY.
Champlin has already had a historic season in 2016. On May 20th, in
the team’s home opener, he hurled the first no-hitter in Beach Bums history
against the Joliet Slammers. He was named the league’s first Pitcher of the Week
in 2016. He is 3-4 with an earned run average at 2.25 which is fourth in the
league and has two complete games with is tied for second. In 60 innings, Kramer
has allowed just 15 earned runs and seven walks. Champlin, 26, out of Olympia,
WA, is in his second season with the Beach Bums after four seasons in the
Toronto Blue Jays’ system. Last year with the Bums, he was 10-6 with a 2.05 ERA.
This year will be his second straight All-Star Game
Steven Patterson, in his first season in the Frontier League, is hitting .293
with six homers, 21 runs batted in, nine doubles, and has been walked 25 times.
The Stockton, CA native had a four game
hitting streak from May 13th to the 17th, when he was 6
for 13 with a HR, two runs batted in, and four runs scored. Patterson has been
the picture of consistency in 2016, reaching base via a hit or a walk in all but
eight of his first 45 games. The former Cleveland Indians draft pick is the only
Beach Bums player to play in all 45 games.
Will Kengor will
get the starting nod at shortstop for the East Division All-Stars. He is hitting
.315 with four home runs and 27 runs batted in. Will is in his first season in
the Frontier League and with the Beach Bums after two seasons in the Detroit
Tigers’ system, last year with the single- A West Michigan Whitecaps. Between
May 25th and 31st, he had a seven game hitting streak,
when he was 13 for 28, which is a .464 average. During that time he hit two home
runs, four doubles, 10 runs batted in, and scored five runs. He also had an 11
game hitting streak from June 17th to the 29th. This
streak was even more impressive, hitting .500 over that streak, with one homer,
four runs batted in, and eight runs scored. That last streak is tied for longest
on the Bums in 2016.
Jose Vargas, rounds out the 2016 class of Beach Bums All-Stars, getting his
third opportunity to play in the mid-season classic. He is hitting .329, which
is seventh in the league. He also has six homers, and 23 runs batted in. The
2012 Frontier League MVP, got off to a rousing start with a ten game hitting
streak and reached base in his first 16 games. During the hit streak, he was 15
for 44(.341), with a home run, six runs batted in, and five runs scored. Between
June 9th to 21st, he had an 11 game hitting streak, tied
for longest on the Bums in 2016. He also hit .341 during that stretch(14 for 41)
with a homer, four doubles, a triple, driving six runs, and scoring five. He
also had a run of three straight games with a home run, from June
25th to the 27th. The Ventura, CA native’s new role as
player/coach certainly hasn’t slowed down the 2015 Frontier League Championship
Congratulations to Jose, Steven, Will, and Kramer, on this great honor of being chosen to represent the Traverse City Beach Bums with the finest of the Frontier League.
