FIELDS LEADS BEACH BUMS TO WIN OVER GRIZZLIES
TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- The Traverse City Beach Bums(12-12) took the lead tonight against the Gateway Grizzlies(6-18) in the fifth and held on for a 6-4 win to clinch this weeks series, two games to one.
A two out rally in the third inning got the offense started for the Beach Bums, starting with a base hit by Ryan Garvey. After Jeff DeBlieux walked, Arby Fields lifted a deep fly down the right field line for his first homer of the season, giving the Beach Bums a 3-0 lead. Gateway immediately responded in the top of the next inning as Gateways Terry McClure hit his own three run shot down the line to tie the game.
Lucas Hunter, who replaced Garvey in the outfield, walked with one out in the fifth. Jeff DeBlieux followed with a walk of his own. Fields came to bat and smashed a fly to left-center field that bounced off the warning track and over the wall for a grounds-rule double, scoring Hunter. After Will Kengor was intentionally walked to load the bases, Alexis Rivera hit a hard grounder into left field for a single that drove in both DeBlieux and Fields. Evan Rogers hit an RBI double in the seventh but that was all the Grizzlies could muster.
Former Eastern Michigan star, Augie Gallardo, picked up the win with tonights six strikeout effort. He allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks in six and 2/3 innings to improve to 2-1. Will Landshaft drops to 1-2 with tonight's loss. He gave up six runs in the six innings he pitched. Jacob Lanning walked the first man he faced in the ninth but got the next three Grizzlies in order for his seventh save.
