CLOSE BUT NOT ENOUGH
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Alpena Men's Barbershop Chorus started the night off strong with a great rendition of the National Anthem, pictured here in a Kennedy Eichstadt photograph.
The Beach Bums(24-41) made the night exciting coming back in the later part of the game, before falling just one run short of overcoming a 9-2 deficit, falling to the River City Rascals(36-31) by a final score of 9-8.
In the first inning, River City got on the board with an RBI double
by Paul Kronenfeld. The Rascals extended their lead to 5-0 in the second. Mike
Jurgella hit an RBI single, Johnny Morales hit a 2-run double, and Kronenfeld
hit an RBI single. The Beach Bums got on the board in the bottom of the frame
when Ross Kivett hit his first Frontier League home run, a solo shot, bringing
the Bums within four.
River City added a run in the fourth on a Josh Silver RBI sacrifice
fly. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Steven Patterson smashed a double
into the right-center field gap. Will Kengor followed with a single to center,
making it a 6-2 deficit for the Beach Bums. River City’s Braxton Martinez hit a
solo home run in the eighth, then Mike Jurgella and Josh Silver each hit RBI
doubles, and the Rascals led by seven.
In the bottom of the eighth, Jeff DeBlieux led off with a walk then
moved to second on a Steven Patterson base hit. With one out, Kivett walked
to load the bases. Alexis Rivera grounded to short but in an effort to complete
a double play, Johnny Morales rushed the throw and it ended up in the dugout.
That allowed DeBlieux, Patterson, and Kivett to score, and Rivera went to
second. Two batters later, the bases were loaded again when John Montgomery and
Zach Files reached on walks.
Orlando Rivera was then
walked to drive in a run and DeBlieux hit an RBI infield single, pulling the
Bums within two at 9-7. In the ninth, Kengor led off with a double, moved to
third on a groundout, and scored on an Alexis Rivera groundout, but that’s as
close as Traverse City would come.
Zeb Sneed went five innings for the win for the Rascals, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk to improve to 3-0. Reinaldo Lopez struggled in the first two innings but survived into the eighth, allowing eight runs on ten hits and two walks. He falls to 2-8 on the season.
