SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums’(19-29),
on the strength of a five run eighth inning, beat the Schaumburg Boomers(23-26),
by the final score of 8-2, winning the three game series, two to
Both teams traded
runs in the first two innings, starting with an RBI double by Steven Patterson,
who drove home Ryan Bottger. In the bottom of the first, Mark Nelson countered
with an RBI single. It was the Bums turn as Marcos Derkes drove in Casey Rodrigue
with an RBI single, but, once again, Schaumburg responded in the bottom of the
inning when Jordan Dean was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Beach Bums
took the lead for good in the top of the fifth, when with two outs, Will Kengor
walked. Patterson then hit his second RBI double of the game, giving them a 3-2
lead after five.
After a scoreless
sixth and seventh, Patterson led off the eighth with a blast over the right
field wall for his seventh home run of the season. Kengor followed with a walk,
then Brugnoni singled to move Kengor to second. Both runners moved up on a
passed ball then Christian Santisteban brought them both in to score with a
single to right, then he moved to second on a throwing error. Rodrigue followed
with an RBI double to drive in Santisteban, then, after Rodrigue moved to third
on a grounder, Jeff DeBlieux drove him in with a sacrifice fly, rounding
out the scoring.
Dylan Stoops earned the win for the Beach Bums to improve his record to 5-2. He went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, four walks, and struck out four. The loss belongs to Gunnar Kines after he went 6 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, three runs, two earned, four walks, and eight strikeouts. He falls to 3-3. The bullpen for the Bums was stellar as they, in concert with Stoops, retired the last 17 men in a row to face them. Jacob Lanning hurled one perfect inning then Luke Barker finished the game, pitching the last three, striking out six, and nabbing his third save of the season.
