AVON, OH – The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-22) had the tying run on base in the ninth ultimately fell to the Lake Erie Crushers(16-14), by the final score of 4-3. (Hometown fans lift their banners in support of the Beach Bums in a file photo.)

The action started right away as Lake Erie starter, Evan Raynor had trouble with his command, loading the bases in the first inning with two outs but the Beach Bums could take advantage. The second inning was a different story, this time the Bums loaded them up with nobody out, thanks to a Brandon Thomasson walk, a Brian Portelli double, and a Jeff DeBlieux walk. Ryan Bottger hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right to score Thomasson, then Casey Rodrigue reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Portelli, it was 2-0 after two.

Lake Erie cut the lead in half after a scoreless third and fourth inning. Scott Carcaise led off with a walk, then was bunted over by Parker Norris. Brady North and Bryan De Le Rosa each followed with singles, the latter scoring Carcaise to make it a 2-1 game.

In the sixth, pinch hitter Brendan Constantino walked, De La Rosa reached on an error, and Max Casper walked. Luke Barker then came into the game and immediately struck out the next two batters he faced. Jose Barraza was next and he laced a double into the right field gap, scoring all three runners, and giving Lake Erie a 4-2 lead.

With  two out in the top of the ninth, Casey Rodrigue doubled into center field. Jose Vargas followed with an RBI single, scoring Rodrigue, and cutting the deficit in half. With that Vargas hit, he now has a nine game hitting streak. Although Will Kengor battled, he eventually struck out to end the game and the loss extends the Bums losing streak to six games.

Lake Erie used eight pitchers in tonight’s contest with Ryan Richardson getting the win to improve to 1-0. Benjamin Libuda, who started the fateful seventh inning, is dealt the loss to fall to 1-3. Mike Devine finished the game off for the Crushers for his third save of the season.
