Bums Inch Closer To First In 6-2 Win

JOLIET, IL— The Traverse City Beach Bums rode the momentum of yesterday’s big win as they beat the first-place Joliet Slammers in the first game of a three-game series in front of 5,179 fans at Silver Cross Field Saturday night by a score of 6-2.

With the win, the Beach Bums improve to 33-31, while Joliet falls to 36-27 on the season. The win moves the Beach Bums just three and a half games back of the Slammers in the Frontier League East Division.

The Beach Bums struck first with three runs in the fourth inning highlighted by an RBI-double by designated hitter Greg Burns to give Traverse City the 1-0 lead. Second baseman Hector Bernal and catcher Chris Kay drove in runs later in the frame to make the score 3-0 in favor of Traverse City. The Beach Bums added on three more runs in the sixth in an inning highlighted by an RBI-single from center fielder Zack Pace. A pair of passed balls by Joliet catcher Trey Manz scored two runs to give the Beach Bums a 6-0 lead.

Traverse City starting pitcher David Deminsky (3-2) pitched 6.1 innings of two-run baseball in earning his third win of the season. Joliet starting pitcher Brian Fowler (4-2) pitched 5.2 innings allowing six runs in suffering his second loss of the season. Beach Bums reliever Matt Miller pitched 2.2 effective innings in relief without allowing a run to complete the contest.

The bottom half of the Beach Bums lineup led the way in the contest. First baseman Jeff Flagg, shortshop Tom Zebroski, Burns, Bernal and Kay combined for six hits and scored five of the six Traverse City runs.
