BEACH BUMS WIN GAME 2 4-1
MARION, IL – The Beach Bums(1-1) got into the win column for the first time in 2016 with gutty 4-1 win over the Southern Illinois Miners(1-1). Dylan Stoops picked up his first win of the season, Beach Bums file photo. .
For the second straight game, the scoring waited until the 3rd inning but tonight, it was the Beach Bums getting on the board first. With one out, Wesley Wallace reached via the base on balls. After being moved to 2nd on a groundout, Jeff DeBlieux drove him in with an RBI single to right. Will Kengor followed with a shot down the left field line, driving home DeBlieux to make it 2-0, although Kengor was thrown out at third to end the inning. In the fifth, the Miners got on the board, as Francisco Rosario and Craig Massey walked, then Julius Gaines drove in Rosario win on RBI single up the middle.
After an uneventful sixth inning, Steven Patterson started the seventh with a bunt base hit down the 3rdbase line, against Miner reliever Andrew Potter. Tyler Peterson followed with a single to right and Jake Rhodes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, to chase Potter from the game. Kevin Walsh came in and immediately struck out the next two batters but suddenly lost the strike zone, walking DeBlieux to force home Patterson, giving the Bums an important insurance run, making it 3-1.
In the eighth, Traverse City kept the offense rolling when Jose Vargas one-hopped a grounds-rule double over the left field wall. After Vargas advanced to third on a wild pitch, Brandon Thomasson wasted little time, driving him home with a single through the drawn-in infield, right up the middle, to bring the score to 4-1.
Southern Illinois seemed to threaten in just about every inning, and that included the ninth. The Miners’ Rosario led off with a double to left but that is as close as they would come as Luke Barker retired the last three in a row to secure the victory.
Traverse City starter Dylan Stoops (1-0) earned the win going five innings, throwing 84 pitches, allowing one run on four hits, three walks, and struck out three. Aston Perritt followed Stoops’ performance with 2 scoreless innings, followed by Luke Barker, who nabbed the last six outs for his 1st save of the season. Jarett Miller(0-1) suffered the loss for Southern Illinois, going six innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out seven.
