MARION, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums(15-15) put up three runs in the 11th and held on for a 5-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners(10-20) to win this week’s series, two games to one.

Through the first four innings, the game was scoreless, thanks to the work of starters John Havird and Chris Washington. In the bottom of the fifth, Southern Illinois took the lead on an RBI single by Ben Moore. The Beach Bums responded in the top of the next inning, starting with Giancarlo Brugnoni reaching on a dropped third strike. After Lucas Hunter sacrificed him to second, Arby Fields drove Brugnoni home to tie the game.

The Miners took the lead back in the seventh when, with runners at second and third, Joel McKeithan scored on a balk call. Once again, it didn’t take long for the Bums to respond. Kendall Patrick led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on an Elijah Trail sacrifice bunt. After Brugnoni walked, pinch-hitter, Jeff DeBlieux hit a single to drive in Patrick to tie the game at two apiece.

The Beach Bums took full advantage of the international tie-breaker rule to start the eleventh. With Steven Patterson on at second, Will Kengor walked, and Alexis Rivera rocketed a single off of the pitcher’s head, scoring Patterson and moving Kengor to second. Patrick sacrificed the runners ahead then Trail ripped a grounds-rule double that one-hopped the fence down the left field line, scoring two runs. Although, Justin Chigbogu hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning, the Beach Bums held on for the win.

Kenneth Knudsen pitched a solid two innings in relief to improve his record to 1-0. He allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out two. Nick Palacios also went two innings for Southern Illinois, but allowed the three runs in the eleventh to fall to 0-2.
