TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums(31-47) overcame an early four-run deficit to defeat the Joliet Slammers(35-44), 6-5 in 10 innings.

Much like the first two games of the series, Joliet took an early lead on the Beach Bums. Tonight, in the first Ridge Hoopii-Haslam hit a two-run triple, then scored on an Edwin Gomez single, making it a 3-0 game. In the top of the fifth, with one away, Hoopii-Haslam hit a solo home run over the left field wall, adding to the Slammers advantage.

The Beach Bums sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the inning to pull within one. Arby Fields led off with a single, Steven Patterson doubled, and Luke Lowery was hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Montgomery followed with a single into right, scoring Fields and Patterson. After a Jeremy Stidham walk, Quintin Alexander hit an RBI single to plate Lowery, making it a 4-3 game. With one out in the sixth, Patterson singled and then Lowery smashed a two-run bomb, deep over the right field wall, and the Bums led by one.

In the top of the ninth, with runners on the corners, David Gonzalez laid down a perfect safety-squeeze bunt, driving in Luis Diaz, sending the game into extra innings. Alexander started off the bottom of the 10th with an infield single to the left of the shortstop. After Josh Hauser moved Alexander to third with a perfect sacrifice bunt, Jeff DeBlieux hit a slow-rolling single to center. The throw to the plate was high and Alexander scored, sending the crowd at Wuerfel Park into a frenzy.

Augie Gallardo came into the game in the ninth and retired all five men to face him for his second win in as many nights. He improved to 5-7. Joliet’s Niko Uherek was solid in the seventh, eight, and ninth, but faltered in the 10th, giving up the winning run and falling to 0-1. With tonight’s win, the Beach Bums have won four straight, their longest streak of the season.

Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and Joliet Slammers finish off this week’s four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and the voice of the Beach Bums, Tom Willms, will go on the air with the Budweiser Pre-Game Show at 6:45 on 101.9FM- The Bay.
