Beach Bums Sweep Riverhawks
TRAVERSE CITY, MI— Traverse City Beach Bums starting pitcher Bryan Banes became the first pitcher to earn 10 victories this season as they beat the Rockford RiverHawks in front of 3,488 fans at Wuerfel Park Thursday night by a score of 5-1. Pete Walters photograph.
Banes (10-3) earned his tenth win after pitching seven innings of one-run baseball on the mound. He becomes the third pitcher in the last two seasons to join the 10-win club, as right hander Kevin Reese and lefty Enrique Lechuga accomplished the feat last year.
Rockford starting pitcher Matt Gibbs (1-4) suffered his fourth loss in 2011 after allowing all five Beach Bums runs in six innings on the hill. Traverse City reliever and former Rockford RiverHawk Scott Reid pitched a pair of scoreless innings on the mound to finish the ballgame.
The Beach Bums opened the scoring in the first inning thanks to an RBI-double from shortstop Jose Vargas, scoring designated hitter Chase Burch to give Traverse City a 1-0 lead. The RiverHawks answered in the third with an RBI-single by left fielder Michael Hur to tie the game at one.
The score would not remain tied much longer as left fielder J.T. Hall delivered the first of his three hits in the contest to drive in a pair of runs in the third inning. Second baseman Tom Zebroski lined a two-run single of his own into right field as Traverse City opened up a 5-1 lead, giving the Beach Bums all the runs they would need in the contest. With the win, the Beach Bums record improves to 45-42, while Rockford falls to 34-53 on the season. Hall led the Beach Bums going 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
The Beach Bums open up an all-important three game series against the Windy City Thunderbolts on FANtastic Fireworks Friday and Senior Games presented by Priority Health at 7:05 p.m. Right hander David Nathanson gets the start for the Beach Bums against Frontier League wins and strikeouts leader Dustin Williams.
