BEACH BUMS STOP THE BOOMERS
SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Traverse City Beach Bums’(18-28)
sent eleven men to the plate in the first inning on their way to a 10-4 win over
the Schaumburg Boomers(22-25), grabbing game one of this week’s three game

With one out in the opening inning, Ryan Bottger got the offence rolling with a single to left. Steven Patterson was then hit in the back by a pitch, and Will Kengor walked to load the bases. Elijah Trail, Giancarlo, Brugnoni, Christian Santisteban, and Gaby Juarbe, each walked with the bases loaded to give the Bums a 4-0 lead. After a pitching change, Jeff DeBlieux singled in a run, then Marcos Derkes hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left, for a six run lead.
Schaumburg, in the bottom of the first, cut the Beach Bums’ lead in half. Zack Wiegel singled to center then, two batters later, Griff Gordon singled to right. With two outs, Paul Kronenfeld drove them both in to score with a double to center. He would score on a Mark Nelson RBI, making it 6-3.
In the second, with one out, Will Kengor smashed a solo homer over the right-center field wall for his sixth of the season. In the third, Brugnoni led off with a single, followed by a Juarbe single. After Juarbe got thrown out trying to take second on a wild pitch, DeBlieux laced an RBI triple down the right field line to score Brugnoni. Derkes came up next and grounded to second, scoring DeBlieux. After Patterson reached on an error and Kengor walked to load the bases, Trail hit an RBI infield single, and the Bums were up 10-3. In the fourth, Nick Oberg hit an RBI double, scoring Chris Robinson, cutting the Traverse City lead to six.
From there, both pitching staffs settled down. At one point, Bums pitchers had retired nine in a row and 17 of 20. Schaumburg relievers, Kurt Lipscomb and Jake Joyce combined to retire 17 in a row. Michael Shreves got the win, giving up four runs, on seven hits, and striking out two, to improve to 2-3. David Napoli could not escape the first inning, allowing six runs on one hit and five walks as he fell to 0-1.
The Beach Bums and Schaumburg Boomers have a quick turnaround as they’ll battle in game two of this week’s three game series, tomorrow at noon. Sasha Keubel will get the call for the Beach Bums and Scott Schultz goes for Schaumburg. Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 11:40am, on 101.9- The Bay.

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
