BEACH BUMS SPLIT TWIN BILL AGAINST LAKE ERIE
CITY, MI – The
Traverse City Beach Bums(4-5) and Lake Erie Crushers(4-5), after being rained
out yesterday, each took a game of today’s doubleheader by identical scores of
The Crushers came out flying in the first inning of game 1, putting
up three runs. After Cody Lenahan and Connor Oliver walked, Sean Hurley hit a
three-run home run over the wall in left field. They added two more in the
fourth when Connor Oliver and Josh McAdams each scored on separate
The Beach Bums finally got on the board in the fifth after Nick
Murphy led off with a triple, then he scored when Jeff DeBlieux grounded out. In
the sixth, Alexis Rivera singled with one away. Elijah Trail moved Rivera to
third on a single of his own, then, Ryan Garvey drove home Rivera with an RBI
base hit to left. The Beach Bums had the tying run at the plate but could not
come back any further.
Lake Erie’s Adam Quintana earned the win with a seven strikeout
performance in six innings. He improved to 2-0. Being handed the loss was Tyler
Painton and he falls to 0-2. Chandler Jagodzinski pitched a perfect seventh for
his third save of the year.
In game 2, it was the Beach Bums’ turn to get off to a quick start. Jeff DeBlieux led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle then newcomer, Arby Fields, hit an RBI double into the left field corner to give the Bums the lead, although he was thrown out trying to extend to a triple. Next up was Steven Patterson and he smashed a solo homer down the left field line for his second of the season to double the advantage.
Kendall Patrick hit an RBI double to deep center
field in the second to drive home Elijah Trail, who reached on an error. Three batters later,
DeBlieux drove in Patrick with a single to right, and it was a 4-0 game. Lake
Erie cut their deficit in half in the fourth thanks to a Josh McAdams two-run
double but, in the bottom of the fifth, Alexis Rivera hit a mammoth solo shot
over the wall in right for his second homer of the year, to close out the
Bums’ starter, Nate Abel, had a solid showing of five innings,
allowing two runs on four hits, two walks, and striking out seven, to improve
his record to 1-1. Connor Reed gave up four runs, only two earned, in three and
a third, and he gets the loss, dropping to 1-1. Jacob Lanning allowed just a
walk and struck out three in two innings for his third save of the
The Beach Bums are off until Wednesday, when they head to Florence,
KY, to take on the Florence Freedom in another doubleheader, starting three game
series. The Freedom will go with Jordan Kraus and Tony Vocca while John Havird
and Augie Gallardo take the mound for the Bums. Tom Willms will have the call
for both seven-inning contests starting with the Budweiser Pre-Game show at
5:15pm, and the first pitch is at 5:35pm online at
Bums return home on Friday, May 26th, to face the Southern Illinois
Miners, starting a six game homestand. The gates open at 6pm for a 7:05pm first
pitch at beautiful Wuerfel Park.
