BEACH BUMS SIGN SHORTSTOP MATT BURNS
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – With spring training coming up in a few short months, the Traverse City Beach Bums make a key addition to their roster with the signing of infielder Matthew Burns. Photograph provided by and used with the permission of the Bridgeport Bluefish.
Burns is the 4th signing by Traverse City out of the California Winter League and comes to Northern Michigan with two seasons of professional experience under his belt.
Last year, the Louisiana native played for both the Grand Prairie Airhogs in the American Association and the Bridgeport Bluefish in the Atlantic League. He combined to hit .205 with four doubles and seven RBI. In his first season, he hit .164 for Grand Prairie, but displayed impressive pop cracking four doubles and belting four home runs, driving in 17.
Prior to joining the professional ranks, Burns played two seasons at Division-I Northwestern State in the Southland Conference. As a senior, he hit .241 with six doubles, a homer and 12 RBI.
The Beach Bums begin defense of their championship Friday May 13th at Southern Illinois. The home opener at Wuerfel Park is Friday May 20th vs. Joliet.
The Traverse City Beach Bums are the 2015 Frontier League Champions and will be playing their 11th season of professional baseball in Northern Michigan starting May 2016. All home games are played at Wuerfel Park, a state of the art ballpark located in Blair Township, MI. The Beach Bums business offices are open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
