Beach Bums Say “o-kay” To Returning Catcher
TRAVERSE CITY, MI — The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to welcome back catcher, Chris Kay as the 2012 roster continues to take form.
After joining the team on July 5, Kay willingly stepped into the position as backup for Beach Bums catcher John Parham after Nate Peterson’s unexpected retirement. Kay wound up playing a key role when Parham was injured and contributed a solid defensive performance behind the plate. Down the stretch Kay hit .169 with four doubles and one homer in 21 games.
“Kay came to the Beach Bums late in 2011 after finishing his college career at Virginia Tech,” says Jason Wuerfel, Director of Baseball Operations. “He is a dependable defensive option at catcher and will look to build off a nice rookie season in 2012.”
The Beach Bums signed Chris Kay after finishing up his senior season at Virginia Tech University where he hit .227 with five doubles, three homers and 13 RBI. As a Hokie, Kay spent the majority of his time behind the plate learning to fine tune his defensive abilities but also made appearances as the designated hitter and at first base. He compiled a .419 career slugging percentage paired with a .992 fielding percentage during his time as at Virginia Tech. Playing college baseball in the ACC, he was able to accomplish this while playing in one of the toughest conferences in college baseball.
