JOLIET, IL – The scoring came early and often this morning as the Traverse City Beach Bums(1-4) were able to hold on for their first victory of the season against the Joliet Slammers(2-3), by a final score of 13-12.

Jeff DeBlieux got the action rolling with a double to lead off the game, then after a Steven Patterson walk, Will Kengor drove in DeBlieux with a double. Patterson would then come in to score on a wild pitch, making it 2-0. Joliet cut the lead in half in the second inning when Alex Rodriguez scored on a throwing error.

The teams traded runs in the third when the Bums’ Alexis Rivera drove in Ryan Garvey with an RBI single and Juan Silva hit a solo home run for Joliet. In the bottom of the inning, Joliet had their biggest inning of the game, bringing eight men to the plate. Ridge Hoopii-Haslam rocked a two-run shot to right then Dane McFarland and Juan Silva added RBI singles, giving the Slammers a 6-4 lead. They made it a three run lead in the fifth when Melvin Rodriguez drove in Edwin Gomez with a single, after Gomez led the frame off with a triple.

The Beach Bums’ offense, in the sixth, exploded with seven runs on five hits. Elijah Trail led off by getting hit by a pitch then moved to second out a groundout. Tyler Peterson followed with a single to right and DeBlieux drove in Trail by reaching on a fielder’s choice. Ryan Garvey and Steven Patterson each hit RBI singles, chasing Slammer starter Daniel Concepcion. Will Kengor greeted new pitcher Justin Lawrence with an RBI triple, then Alexis Rivera hit his first homer of the season, and the Bums led 11-7.

Tyler Peterson knocked his first homer of the season, a solo shot, leading off the top of the seventh inning. DeBlieux walked, stole second, and after Ryan Garvey singled to move him to third, Patterson drove him in with a sacrifice fly. Joliet picked up single runs in the eighth and ninth, a delayed steal of home by Marc Flores, and an RBI single by Sam Tidaback, but Traverse City held on for the win.

John Havird, making his professional debut for the Beach Bums, picked up the win in a five inning effort. Daniel Concepcion went 5 2/3 innings for Joliet, giving up nine runs on 10 hits, falls to 0-1 with the loss. Jacob Lanning got the last two outs of the game for his first save of the season.
