BEACH BUMS OVERPOWER OTTERS
EVANSVILLE, IN – The Traverse City Beach Bums (28-37) started with a four run first
inning and didn’t look on their way to a 14-4 win over the Evansville Otters
Marcos Derkes led off the game with a walk then stole second. Two batters
later, Jose Vargas drove him home with an RBI double, and the
Bums were off to the races. Steven Patterson followed with an
RBI double of his own then Elijah Trail ripped a two-run homer down the left
field line. Evansville got on the board in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Kaeo Aliviedo, although Casey Rodrigue made a fantastic diving
catch, potentially saving further damage in the inning. In the top of the
fifth, Patterson knocked home Vargas with an RBI double, but in the
bottom of the frame, Aliviado and Chris Breen each hit RBI singles, cutting the
Bums’s lead to 6-3.
Traverse City then broke
the game open in the sixth inning with a five run outburst. Giancarlo
Brugnoni started with a walk and moved to second on a Jeff
DeBlieux single. With two away, Rodrigue
hit a double to center, scoring both runners, but the Beach Bums weren’t done
there. After a Vargas walk, Patterson blasted a three run homer,
his eleventh long-ball of the year, and it was 10-3. Evansville got one back in
the bottom of the inning when Kolten Yamaguchi hit an RBI single.
For the second consecutive
inning, the Beach Bums batted around. This time, they sent ten men to the dish.
Brugnoni again started it with a
walk and scored on a DeBlieux RBI
double. After Derkes walked and Rodrigue was hit by a pitch to load the
bases, Vargas grounded out to drive in a run. Patterson picked up his sixth RBI with his third double of the
game, then Christian Santisteban walked with the bases loaded,
finishing out the scoring. All in all, the Beach Bums had twelve hits and ten
of them went for extra bases.
Bums starter, Tucker
Simpson went five innings for the win to improve to 3-1. He allowed
two earned runs on five hits, one walk, and struck out seven. Jacob
Lanning and Joeanthony Rivera hurled the rest of the
way, allowing just one run on five hits. Luc Rennie is dealt the loss for the
Otters, after going 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits, three
walks, and he struck out six. He falls to 1-3.
