BEACH BUMS OUST SLAMMERS IN TWELVE

JOLIET, IL – After two straight rain-outs, the Traverse City Beach Bums (32-42) used extra innings to upend the Joliet Slammers (42-34), by a final score of 6-4.

Joliet got on the scoreboard first, in the first, on an RBI single by Jake Gronsky. With two outs in the second, Steven Patterson ripped his 12th homer of the season over the right field walk to tie the game.  Kendall Patrick then led off the top of the third by blasting a solo shot over the left field fence for his third of the season, giving the Beach Bums a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Gronsky drove in another run via the RBI single to knot the game up.

Jeff DeBlieux led off the sixth inning by getting hit by a pitch. He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and then on to third when Marcos Derkes grounded out. Two batters later, Jose Vargas doubled to left, driving in DeBlieux, and giving the Bums another one run lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Joliet’s Charlie White slammed a long ball over the right field wall, once again trying the game.

It took until the eleventh, and the tie-breaker rules, to get offense going again. Will Kengor led off the top of the inning on second base and immediately came in to score on Elijah Trail’s RBI single to left.  In the bottom of the inning, Marc Flores started the inning at second, moved to third on a Sykes Orvis infield hit, then scored on Casey Fletcher’s RBI sacrifice fly, sending the game into the 12th.

This time, it was Giancarlo Brugnoni who was the runner at second. Gaby Juarbe hit a double to the right field wall but Brugnoni only reached third, as he was making sure it would not be caught. DeBlieux followed with a roller to the right side. Brugnoni scored, Juarbe reached third and DeBlieux beat the throw to first for an RBI infield single. After DeBlieux stole second, and a couple of strikeouts, Vargas was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kengor stepped up and induced a walk to drive in a very important insurance run.

Jacob Lanning got the final out in the eleventh and all three outs in the 12th to earn the win and improve to 4-5. Marc Rutledge suffered the loss, allowing the final two runs on two hits and a walk. He falls to 2-3.
