TRAVERSE CITY, MI – In contrast to last night’s blowout victory, The Traverse City Beach Bums(7-7) dropped behind early against the Southern Illinois Miners(5-9) tonight, and ultimately lost by a final score of 8-3.

The first five batters reached to get things rolling in the first for the Miners. Justin Chigbogu drove in two runs with a single then Ryan Lashley hit an RBI single of his own. Ben Moore completed the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly and Southern Illinois took a 4-0 lead. It took until the fifth but with three straight doubles by the Miners, including RBI hits by Lashley and Billy Germaine, they extended the advantage to six.

With two outs in the sixth, Alexis Rivera hit a mammoth shot, his third homer over the season, over the right field wall to get the Beach Bums in the run column. Elijah Trail led off in the seventh with a double. Two batters later, Nick Murphy drove him home with an RBI single to left, and moved to second on the throw to the plate. On a wild pitch, Murphy moved to third, but the throw to try to nab him got away from the third baseman, allowing Murphy to cut the deficit to 6-3.

In the eighth, Southern Illinois was able to add some insurance runs. Craig Massey drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Nolan Earley followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. In the ninth, the Beach Bums got a couple of men on base, but could not continue the rally.

The Miners’ Ethan Gibbons earned the win with a six inning performance, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks, while he struck out five. He improves to 1-1. Nate Abel battled through five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, but fell to 1-1 with the loss. Enrique Oquendo had a solid Bums debut, striking out three in two innings.
