BEACH BUMS FALL IN NAIL-BITER

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Reinaldo Lopez made his Wuerfel Park debut in tonight’s game, getting the start and going eight innings. He gave up just one earned run on six hits and two walks, while he struck out five. He suffers the hard-luck loss to fall to 0-2. The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-9) left nine men on base in tonight’s pitcher’s duel, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Schaumburg Boomers(13-5).

In the rubber game of this week’s three game series, the Beach Bums got on the board early in the game. Jeff DeBlieux led off the first with a single to center. Then, after Arby Fields bunted him over with a successful sacrifice, Steven Patterson hit a base hit to right. DeBlieux came in to score to give Traverse City a 1-0 lead.

Schaumburg didn’t take long to respond as they scored in to top of the second when Cosimo Cannella grounded home Kenny Towns, who led off the inning with a single, to tie up the game. In the fourth, with two outs and runners on first and second, James Keller hit a ball right in front of plate. The throw to first got away, allowing a run to score, giving Schaumburg the lead. They picked up an insurance run in the ninth on a Jack Parenty RBI single.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Bums put together a two out rally. Kendall Patrick hit a grounds-rule double, Giancarlo Brugnoni walked, and pinch-hitter Nick Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases but the Beach Bums couldn’t complete the comeback.

Aryton Costa matched Lopez pitch-for-pitch to pick up his second win of the season, improving to 2-0. Jake Joyce bent but did not break in the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums hit the road for a quick three-game in Pennsylvania against the Washington Wild Things. Nate Abel gets the call for Traverse City against Brian O’Keefe for Washington. First pitch is at 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 6:45pm with the Budweiser Pre-Game Show, on 101.9- The Bay.
