Beach Bums Drop Series To Riverhawks
TRAVERSE CITY, MI-- The Traverse City Beach Bums kept the score close but came up short as the Rockford RiverHawks took the final game of the three-game series by a score of 5-4 in front of 2,814 fans at Wuerfel Park. Pictured here, Beach Bums third baseman Jose Vargas, a Pete Walters photograph.
RiverHawks shortstop Jake Eigsti opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the first inning to make it 1-0. In the second, Rockford right fielder Cameron Satterwhite launched his third home run of the season off Beach Bums starter Eric Thomas to extend their lead to 2-0.
The Beach Bums mounted a small comeback in the seventh and eighth innings thanks to a solo home run by third baseman Jose Vargas in the seventh inning, then an RBI groundout from center fielder Zack Pace and a RiverHawks throwing error to bring in a pair of runs in the eighth to make it a 5-4 RiverHawks lead. Rockford reliever Brett Durand came on to record the final four outs of the game, giving the RiverHawks the series win.
Matt Zoltak (1-0) pitched seven innings and allowed only two Beach Bums runs in recording his first win of the season. Thomas (0-2) threw seven innings and allowed four runs while suffering the loss for Traverse City. Durand recorded his third save of the season for finishing the ballgame.
The RiverHawks improve to 5-4 with the win, while the Beach Bums fall to 4-5 on the season.
