Beach Bums Drop Series Opener

AVON, OH — The Traverse City Beach Bums got behind early and were unable to climb out of a big deficit as they lost the first game of their six-game roadtrip to the Lake Erie Crushers in front of 1,741 fans at All Pro Freight Stadium by a score of 15-4. Pete Walters file photograph

The Crushers opened the scoring with four runs in the first inning off Traverse City starter Justin Anderson highlighted by a two-run triple from center fielder Scott Houin to give Lake Erie a 4-0 lead.

Traverse City got back in the contest in the second inning thanks to a two-run home run from shortstop Tom Zebroski, his second of the season to cut the Beach Bums deficit to 4-2. Lake Erie scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run from shortstop Jodam Rivera, making it a 6-2 Crushers lead. Rivera was playing his first game of the season in what is now his fourth season with the club.

The Crushers added six more runs off of Traverse City pitching in the third and fourth innings to give themselves a 14-2 lead. Houin launched his second home run of the season in the fourth inning and finished the contest a single shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in five runs on the night.

Lake Erie pitcher Randy Sturgill (1-0) pitched five solid innings in his first start of 2011, allowing three runs to earn his first victory of the season. Crushers reliever Travis Risser pitched four innings in relief to record his second save of the season. Anderson (0-1) picked up his first loss after allowing nine runs in just 2.1 innings on the mound. Zebroski, third baseman Jose Vargas and right fielder Matt Brown led the Traverse City offensive attack with two hits each in the ballgame. The Beach Bums fall to 16-15 with the loss, while the Crushers improve their record to 12-19 in 2011.
