TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums(11-12) and Gateway Grizzlies(6-17) combined to strand 19 base-runners, as Gateway held on for a 3-2 win in a low-scoring game.

After two scoreless innings, the Grizzlies got the scoring going in the third, picking up two runs in the frame. With Cody Livesay on at second, Matt Hearn tried to sacrifice him to third but the throw to first got away, allowing Livesay to score. Two batters later, Hearn came in to score on a Zach Lavy sacrifice fly, doubling the Gateway lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Giancarlo Brugnoni led off with a double to center field. Nick Murphy then lifted a double down the left field line to score Brugnoni to cut the deficit in half. Gateway got the two run lead back in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by Hearn, giving the Grizzlies a 3-1 advantage.

Elijah Trail came up with one out in the sixth and drew a walk. Kendall Patrick followed with a single to left and then Brugnoni walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Murphy picked up his second RBI of the game, hitting a fly ball to center, scoring Trail, to make it 3-2. From there, the Beach Bums would be unable to threaten to score again.

Gateway’s Dylan Craig earned the win with a six strikeout performance. He allowed both Bums runs on six hits and three walks, improving his record to 1-3. Reinaldo Lopez seemed to be under pressure in all six innings that he appeared. He only allowed one earned run, three in total, on nine hits and a walk, as Lopez falls to 0-3. Kaleb Earls pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts for his third save of the year.
