TRAVERSE CITY, MI – In their first meeting since last year’s Frontier League Championship Series, the Traverse City Beach Bums (6-9) dropped a close contest to the River City Rascals (8-7), by a final score of 5-4.

As they did in the past three games, the Bums scored first. Tonight, Ryan Bottger led off the first inning with a double to right field. Two batters later, Jose Vargas, who has reached base in all 14 games he has played, drove in Bottger with a single right up the middle to give then a 1-0 lead.

Jeff DeBlieux started the third inning for the Beach Bums with a double to right. Will Kengor continued his hitting streak, now standing at seven, with an RBI double to left, plating DeBlieux. With two away, Steven Patterson hit an RBI double of his own, this time to right field, giving Traverse City a 3-0 advantage.

In the fifth, River City clawed back into the game, starting with Mike Turgella, Dominque Taylor, and Johnny Morales, all getting on base to load them up with one out. Josh Silver came to the plate and smacked a bases-clearing triple to the right field gap to tie the game up at three. Silver would give the Rascals the lead, scoring on Josh Ludy’s RBI single to center.

River City added to their lead in the seventh when Clint Freeman brought Morales to the plate with a single. The Beach Bums responded in the bottom of the frame when Casey Rodrigue doubled to lead off the inning, and scored when Bottger singled to right. That was as close as the Bums would come, ending their winning streak at three.

Joe Scanio got the start for the Rascals and earned the win to improve to 2-1. At one point during the game, Beach Bums starting pitcher Jacob Lanning retired 12 in a row, but he suffered the loss for the Beach Bums to drop to 1-2, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out four. Zac Treese struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his fourth save of the season
