BEACH BUMS COMEBACK TO STUN EVANSVILLE

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums (23-31) trailed the Evansville Otters (31-22) by as much as five, but roared back for a 7-6 victory, taking the finale of this weekend’s three game series.

Evansville took an early lead much like they did in Friday night’s game. Chris Breen hit an RBI double and Nik Balog followed with a two-run double and it was a 3-0 game right out of the gate. In the third, the Otters added on two more runs when Kaeo Aliviado plated two with a double to right field.

The Beach Bums started the comeback in the bottom of the frame, sending eight men to the plate. Gaby Juarbe led off with an infield single that blooped over the pitcher’s head. Jeff DeBlieux then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and Juarbe moved to second. Marcos Derkes then walked to load the bases with nobody out. All-Star Steven Patterson came up next and ripped a double down the right field line to score two runs, and the rally was on. Jose Vargas followed with a grounder to the shortstop, scoring Derkes, then Will Kengor singled to left, scoring Patterson, and the deficit was down to one.

In the top of the fourth, Evanville made it a 6-4 game when Christopher Riopedre scored on an error. The Bums responded in the fifth when Derkes led off with a walk and Kengor drove him home with another RBI hit, this time a double. After a scoreless sixth, DeBlieux led off with a single to right. Derkes tried to bunt him over to second but the pitcher’s throw to first got away and DeBlieux was safe at third. Patterson hit an RBI single to center, scoring DeBlieux, tying the game at six. In the eighth, Christian Santisteban singled to start the inning and Ryan Bottger came in to pinch run. After Casey Rodrigue successfully sacrificed him to second, Juarbe rocked an RBI double to right-center, giving the Bums the lead.

The Beach Bums’ relievers’ performance allowed them to keep the game close for the comeback. The combination of Benjamin Libuda, Joeanthony Rivera, Jacob Lanning and Luke Barker, combined to pitch 6 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits, walking one, and striking out six. Lanning gets the win to improve to 3-5 and Barker picks up his fifth save. Tyler Thompson, who allowed the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, drops to 4-3 with the loss.
