BEACH BUMS BOLSTER PITCHING & INFIELD ROSTERS
TRAVERSE CITY, MI. – The Traverse City Beach Bums bolstered their 2016 roster with the addition of three experienced infielders and a rookie pitcher.
Infielder Will Kengor comes to the team following two seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization. “I’ve been following Kengor since he played at Slippery Rock and wanted to sign him a couple years ago before the Tigers drafted him”, said Jason Wuerfel, Director of Baseball Operations. “We’ve had a lot of luck with ex-Slippery Rock guys like Scott Dunn and Don Pugliese and I think Kengor is in that same mold. He had a great year playing for the Whitecaps last year and I expect him to a key part of our lineup.”
Last season, Kengor hit .286 with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Midwest League. He smacked 19 doubles and three triples, homering once and driving in 38. He also walked 54 times and was hit by five pitches, resulting in a .386 on-base percentage, while stealing five bases.
OF/1B Ryan Bottger comes to the team following two seasons in the Houston Astros organization. "Bottger comes highly recommended by several ppeople in our network as a solid all-around ball player, " said Wuerfel. "He's a switch hitter with some power from both sides of the plate and has the potential to be a big pick up for us."
Last year, Bottger hit .218 with six home runs and 46 RBI in 103 games for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Midwest League. He also cracked 11 doubles and found his way on base, walking 53 times. In 2014, he split time between Quad Cities and the Tri City ValleyCats in the New York-Penn League, hitting .266 with eight doubles, five homers and 25 RBI.
C/1B Nate Causey comes to the Beach Bums following two seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization. "Causey adds to our experience behind the plate and can play first base too," explained Wuerfel. "He gives us some power potential from the left side of the plate which we needed after Yazy Arbelo retired." During 2015, Causey played in 28 games combined between the Boise Hawks and Asheville Tourists, hitting .228 with three home runs and 24 RBI. He also walked 21 times, helping him to a .368 combined on-base percentage.
RHP Jesse Montalto: Montalto comes to Traverse City following two seasons at Barry University. "Montalto comes highly recommended by scouts as a power arm guy with a lot of potential. We're excited to bring him in and see what he can do," said Jason Wuerfel, Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations.
Last year for the Buccaneers he appeared in a team-leading 23 games with four saves and a 3.35 ERA. He struck out 45 batters in 37.2 innings, a rate of 10.75 per nine innings. In 2014, he went 2-2 with a 6.19 ERA in 12 games, making five starts. Prior to coming to Barry, he posted a 5-4 record with a 3.11 ERA in 16 games (12 starts) for Lackawanna Community College, helping lead the Falcons to the NJCAA World Series. He struck out 83 batters in 75.1 innings. Montalto began his career at SUNY Cortland in 2012 and did not allow an earned run in five appearances for a Red Dragons team that advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series.
