BEACH BUMS BEAT WINDY CITY IN HIGH-SCORING BARN-BURNER
CITY, MI – Tonight’s
game between the Traverse City Beach Bums(32-48) and Windy City
Thunderbolts(44-38) featured five lead changes, 23 runs, and 28 hits, as the
Bums prevailed by a final score of 12-11.
Windy City got the offense rolling in the very first inning when
Kyle Wood doubled in a run and Tim Zier hit an RBI single. They made it a 3-0
game when Wood hit another RBI double in the second. In the bottom of the
second, Arby Fields led off by legging out an infield hit, then Nick Murphy hit
a two-run homer, his third of the season, off the top of the wall in left, to
pull within one. Corey Bass doubled the Thunderbolts lead in the top of the
third with a solo homer but Orlando Rivera led off the bottom of the frame with
his first home run of the season, a solo shot, making it a 4-3 Windy
After a scoreless fourth, Jeff DeBlieux hit a one out single into
center. Orlando Rivera drove him in with an RBI double, then scored himself when
Steven Patterson doubled, giving the Bums their first lead of the game. Coco
Johnson, who stole five bases tonight, tied the game up in the sixth with an RBI
single, evening the game at five.
The Beach Bums sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the
sixth to break the game open. Arby Fields led off with a walk then moved to
second on a passed ball. Nick Murphy followed with an RBI double, then Quintin
Alexander was hit by a pitch, and Josh Hauser, while trying to moved the runners
up, made it to first on an error, loading the bases. DeBlieux hit a sacrifice
fly to center, Orlando Rivera hit an RBI single, and Luke Lowery hit an RBI
double, giving Traverse City a 10-5 lead.
The ‘Bolt struck back in the top of the seventh with a six run, six
hit barrage, bringing 11 men to the plate, and retaking the lead. Keenyn Walker
and Coco Johnson hit back-to-back two-run doubles, Larry Balkwill hit an RBI
single and Zier drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to left, giving Windy City the
lead once again, at 11-10.
Josh Hauser led off the bottom of the eighth for the Beach Bums by
getting hit by a pitch and stealing second. Orlando Rivera, who was a triple sky
of the cycle, drove in Hauser to tie the game with his second RBI double of the
game. After a pitching change, Patterson slipped a single into left, scoring
Orlando Rivera, giving the Bums the lead for good.
Devin Over earned the win tonight for Traverse City, pitching a
perfect eighth inning with a strikeout, to improve to 4-2. Josh Glick who sent
the Bums down in order in the seventh, allowed the two runs in the eighth. He
falls to 4-1 with tonight’s loss. Joel Toribio hurled a spotless ninth with two
strikeouts for his first save.
Tomorrow evening, the Beach Bums and Windy City Thunderbolts get
together for the final time in 2017, and the rubber game of this weekend’s three
game series. Brian Bayliss takes the ball for the Beach Bums while Zac Westcott
starts for Windy City. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm and the voice of the
Beach Bums, Tom Willms, will go on the air with the Budweiser pre-game show at
4:45 on 101.9FM- The Bay.
