CRESTWOOD, IL – For the second straight game, the Traverse City Beach Bums’(13-25) offense rose to the occasion, tonight pumping out twelve runs on eighteen hits to double up the Windy City Thunderbolts(22-16) by the final score of 12-6.

Jose Vargas got the game rolling in style as he blasted a solo home run over the left-center field wall in the first inning for his fifth long ball of the season. Windy City tied the game in the second with an RBI double by Corey Bass, scoring Reggie Lawson, who doubled earlier in the inning. After a scoreless third, the Bums regained the lead in the fourth and never looked back. Vargas reached on an infield hit to start things off.  Will Kengor singled to center. Two batters later, Steven Patterson drove them both home with a double down the right field line to make it 3-1.

In the sixth, both teams sent nine men to the plate, exchanging four run innings, starting with the Beach Bums in the top of the frame. Vargas led off by singling to left followed by a Kengor walk. Giancarlo Brugnoni then hit an RBI double to left, scoring Vargas. After a pitching change, Patterson hit a double scoring Kengor. Christian Santisteban joined in with a two-run single to extend the Bums’ lead to 7-1.  Windy City got their four runs on a Reggie Lawson RBI double, a Cody Keefer RBI infield hit, in which a second run scored on an error, and an RBI double by Corey Bass.

With one out in the seventh, Kengor walked, Brugnoni and Patterson singled to load the bases. Santisteban hit a slow grounder to short, scoring Kengor, and Traverse City led by three. The Beach Bums had another big inning in the eighth, bringing another nine men to the plate, and scoring an additional four runs. Jeff DeBlieux led off with a single but was picked off of first. Then with two outs Ryan Bottger, Vargas, and Kengor, each singled to load the bases. Burgoni fouled off a number of tough pitches and eventually drew the RBI walk. Patterson then came up and hit a 2-run single to right, for his fourth and fifth RBI of the game. Santisteban then drove in Brugnoni with an RBI single for his fourth RBI of the game, and it was 12-5. Windy City got an RBI single by Taylor Smart in the ninth but that is all they would muster.

Austin Bembnowski made his first professional start, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out three. He gets his first win to go to 1-0.
