TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums announced today that they have completed a trade with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association. The Beach Bums acquired infielder Brett Balkan in exchange for outfielder Jay Austin and a player to be named later.

"Balkan is a plus defender that can play anywhere on the infield," said Beach Bums Director of Baseball Operations Jason Wuerfel. "In the Frontier League it is vital to have a player that can play multiple positions and Brett gives us that component."

In 37 games for the Canaries last season, Balkan hit .246 with six doubles and seven RBI. He also stole four bases and struck out just five times in 137 plate appearances. Balkan was one of the top defensive shortstops in the league as well, committing just two errors in 160 total chances, a .988 fielding percentage.

Prior to joining Sioux Falls, the Carlsbad, Calif. Native spent parts of two seasons in the Pecos League, hitting .328 with 16 doubles and 37 RBI, splitting time between the Raton Osos and the Roswell Invaders.

The Beach Bums begin defense of their championship Friday May 13th at Southern Illinois. The home opener at Wuerfel Park is Friday May 20th vs. Joliet Slammers.

The Traverse City Beach Bums are the 2015 Frontier League Champions and will be playing their 11th season of professional baseball in Northern Michigan starting May 2016. All home games are played at Wuerfel Park, a state of the art ballpark located in Blair Township, MI. The Beach Bums business offices are open from 8:30 am to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday.
