TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Traverse City Beach Bums continue to add depth to the 2016 roster with the signing of right-handed pitcher Luke Barker.   Barker was recently signed out of the California Winter League.

"Luke is a big strong RHP with a good action sinking fastball, a tight slider and splitter," said Manager Dan Rohn. "He should help fortify the back-end of the bullpen for us."

Barker spent four seasons as a pitcher at Chico State University, racking up numerous accolades for achievements both on and off the field.  He went 16-11 with a 2.91 ERA in 72 appearances, 26 of them starts. As a senior, he was an All-West Region and First Team CCAA honoree, going 4-3 with a 1.73 ERA in 11 starts.

As a junior in 2014, he led all of NCAA Division II in saves with 18.

He ranks second all-time for the Wildcats in appearances (72), is third in saves (18), fourth in strikeouts (196) and innings pitched (257.0) while ranking 10th in victories (16).  During the summer of 2015, Barker led the Palm Springs Power to the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League championship, going 6-0 and tossing the first perfect game in the league’s history.

Following the conclusion of his playing career, Barker became a member of the coaching staff at his alma mater, overseeing strength and conditioning.

The Beach Bums begin defense of their championship Friday May 13th at Southern Illinois. The home opener at Wuerfel Park is Friday May 20th vs. Joliet.
